Analyzing Photographs
Initial Reading: What can an initial look reveal?
1. Glance at the picture. What is your first ‘gut’ response?
2. Consider your background knowledge. What do you already know about the context of the picture – the time, place, situation, etc.? (list key facts)
Closer Look: How do the pictures techniques help to present the message?
3. Find labels. How do the words, numbers, etc. in the drawing express ideas or identify people or objects? What message do the labels send? (use the information provided about the picture in the words below the picture as well)
4. Notice the people in the picture. How do their facial expressions (exaggerated, oversimplified, emotional features of the figures) add to the effect of the picture? What message does this send to the reader?
5. Identify the symbols (clothing, religious, cultural, etc.). What do these signs or images represent? Is there a lack of symbols in the picture, why? How does this add to the message of the picture?
Draw Conclusions: What overall impression can you draw?
6. Identify possible biases. Whose perspective or point of view is expressed in the Photograph?
7. Explain the overall message of the photograph. A good interpretation is specific and detailed.

ReplyDelete1. He’s probably going to jail/prison in the picture because he’s in handcuffs. His identity is protected because its not showing his face. How the appearance is he may be older than what a youth is considered to be. On his wrist it says slap here
2. In a closer look his wrists say slap here which could mean he’ll just get a slap on the wrists and let go for his crime. His shirt also says violent youth which might mean he committed a serious crime and because he’s a youth he won't get punished for it immensely.
3. The perspective is off the writer thinking that youth crime aren’t punished enough for the crimes they commit. The overall message is that youth should be punished more for more serious crimes instead of being protected by their age.

2.Slap here could be refering to put the handcuffs in that spot.Which means he has probably been arrested many times.Also his shirt says violent youth with could mean that he is a bad kid.
3.The labels represent that he has been arrested a lot to the point that it is so common to get a pair of handcuffs on. His shirt also says violent youth.
4. There is no faces shown in the picture.
5. He is dressed like a rambunctious teenager. He has handcuffs on to represent he is being arrested. His wrists say slap me meaning that he was arrested multiple times so he got them to have satire.
6.there is a bias that they think that youth are very violent and should be punished more
7.They have repeat offenders because no one understands them.
