Analyzing Photographs
Examine the Photograph/Picture. Use the questions below to help you decode the message of the photograph. Be specific and include as many details as possible in your answers. It is important to reference aspects directly from the photograph when answering your questions whenever possible.
Initial Reading: What can an initial look reveal?
1. Glance at the picture. What is your first ‘gut’ response?
2. Consider your background knowledge. What do you already know about the context of the picture – the time, place, situation, etc.? (list key facts)
Closer Look: How do the pictures techniques help to present the message?
3. Find labels. How do the words, numbers, etc. in the drawing express ideas or identify people or objects? What message do the labels send? (use the information provided about the picture in the words below the picture as well)
4. Notice the people in the picture. How do their facial expressions (exaggerated, oversimplified, emotional features of the figures) add to the effect of the picture? What message does this send to the reader?
5. Identify the symbols (clothing, religious, cultural, etc.). What do these signs or images represent? Is there a lack of symbols in the picture, why? How does this add to the message of the picture?
Draw Conclusions: What overall impression can you draw?
6. Identify possible biases. Whose perspective or point of view is expressed in the Photograph?
7. Explain the overall message of the photograph. A good interpretation is specific and detailed.

ReplyDeleteMy first response is that the charter is not being used to its full potential and its not complete and that it is its 25th year of the charter
2.It is the 25th birthday of the charter of rights and freedoms and some one is cuting up the charter.
3.The cake represents the canadian charter of rights,and the 25 is representing how many years it's been in place.The hand is the government and the cake is being cut by the government.
4. The hand is the government ruining the charter by removing and adding new pieces
5. There is a 25 candle. This represents the 25th anniversary of the charter. The cake has the charter printing on it so it represents the charter. The lack of other symbols seems to make the authors point blatantly clear.
6. The point of view is probably a citizen who thinks that the government is not doing its job and is taking away our rights

I see a MP’s hand and everyone else is cutting a piece out of the charter one piece at a time.
ReplyDeleteNew laws affect the charter a little bit each time one is made. It’s the 25th year the charter was in place so it must be 2007 when the Conservatives were in power in Canada.
All we get for a person is a hand and he must be important because he’s cutting a piece out of the charter. The cake looks like the charter of rights and freedoms.
The point of view is someone important in Canada like an MP thinking the government is taking a piece out of the charter unfairly.
The overall message is that every time the government makes a new law it starts to violate our rights in the charter more and more.

The cake represents the rights and freedoms. The 25 candle represents its been 25 years since the charter was created.

A cake with the charter of rights and freedoms, celebrating it being 25 years old and cutting it because they think they don’t need it anymore. They are giving parts of the charter to some and not others, like you would with pieces of cake.
Whose perspective or point of view is expressed in the Photograph?
Important people that are in charge of government and can control the laws people follow. The people the government aren’t being fair to and aren’t using the charter.
